About Us
Hi, my name is Owen Huffaker. I am a Pelican/woodenboat builder living and working in the Pacific Northwest. Our home and shop is located in Anacortes Washington a couple miles north of Deception Pass on highway 20. I build other wooden boats as well, but I have decided that my job as a person on this planet is to keep the San Francisco Pelican sailboat alive, spread the word about this versatile little boat, and hopefully bring the pelican experience into everyone's life. I learned to build the Pelican from the Smith Brothers and I build my Pelicans the way they built them for 42 years. Many of those pelicans that they built back in the 60's are still around, a tribute to the Pelican design and the Smiths Brothers' work. A Smith built pelican up here is the defacto standard for Pelican construction.
This is a family business; I make sawdust and my wife Sydney (Syd) does canvaswork, sail repair and helps when I need a third hand or pick out colors. And last but not least the dog, Maggy. Her job is to keep the rabbits from sitting in one spot too long. She tries to catch them but bunnies are just too fast.
